IMEI registration of mobile phone will be necessary before sale in India

Through a notification on Monday, the government said that it will be necessary to register locally made or imported mobile phones in the country before sale and obtain IMEI certificate from the Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction Portal operated by the Department of Telecommunications. will be required.

"The manufacturer shall register the International Mobile Equipment Identification Number of each mobile phone manufactured in India with the Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction Portal of the Government of India with the Department of Telecommunications before the first sale of the mobile phone," the government said in the notification.

The government has issued this notification under the Prevention of Tampering (Prevention of Tampering) of the Mobile Device Equipment Identification Number (Amendment) Rules, 2022. The government has launched the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) project to block and trace lost or stolen mobile phones and added the Indian Counterfeit Device Ban (ICDR) system to curb the spread of such handsets. At present, only the facility to block stolen or lost mobile is available on the portal.

The CEIR project is also addressing the issue of counterfeit devices to address the issue of lost mobile phones. With the new rule, the IMEI number of the imported devices will need to be registered on the ICDR system. Along with this, it will be mandatory to obtain IMEI certificate for import of mobile device through custom ports.
