An overnight flash flood warning for New Orleans was issued after severe storms on Thursday tore across portions of Texas and then moved into western Louisiana through the early hours of Friday. Several communities in the storm's path will start to assess the damage the storm has left behind as the sun rises on Friday.

According to Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña, who cited early information, two deaths were caused by fallen trees and one person died when a crane was collapsed by severe winds in Houston.

Witness footage shows violent storms in Houston that tore off a section of the downtown Hyatt Regency's roof, blew out the windows of skyscrapers, and partially collapsed a nightclub, filling the hotel lobby with rain and debris.

Mayor John Whitmire announced that due to severe power outages that have damaged traffic lights and darkened the city, all non-essential personnel are asked to stay at home tomorrow. Additionally, public schools are closed. He said, "The downtown area is dusted with glass from broken windows, and the streets are littered with debris, downed trees, and power lines."

At least one Texas community has had water rescues due to significant flooding. In Bryan, some 100 miles northwest of Houston, rising flood levels required the assistance of up to 20 drivers, according to authorities.
